Trenzseater’s Brown Residence project presents a refined balance of timeless sophistication and functional living, set within a stately home on the fringe of Christchurch. Undertaken during a substantial renovation, the brief called for an interior that was both distinctive and elevated, while accommodating the practicalities of everyday family life. The result is a home rich in visual texture, imbued with understated glamour and deeply personal touches.
From the initial concept, Trenzseater set out to create a unified design narrative — seamlessly blending bespoke window treatments, wall coverings, ambient lighting, statement furniture, curated art, and decorative elements. Each space is crafted with fine materials and layered detail, offering an immersive and tactile experience throughout. The entry sets the tone with an unexpected ceiling treatment in embossed alligator wallpaper, leading into adjoining spaces wrapped in warm, gold leaf wallcoverings that offer an immediate sense of luxury.
Lighting is integral to the design, with dramatic brass fixtures featuring prominently. A custom-designed crystal chandelier cascades through the central stairwell — 21 pendants creating a rainfall effect that glimmers in the reflection of a statement mirror. Beneath, Nero Marquina and Calacatta marbles form an intricate mosaic entry floor, echoing classic geometry with a modern edge.
Custom-designed furniture — dressed in plush velvets, tactile wools, and aged leathers — is paired with high-lacquer finishes and European rugs to lend each room a composed and intentional aesthetic. Under the cantilevered staircase, a bespoke wine cellar crafted from American Oak and matte black steel, accented with concealed LED lighting, serves as both a functional element and a dramatic visual feature.
Seagrass wall textures, layered artworks, and personal artefacts contribute to an atmosphere of relaxed refinement. With this project, Trenzseater has delivered a richly composed residence — one that balances elegance with ease, and artistry with liveability.
